callifest-dec-2015The precincts of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Sanskrutik Kendra are filled with sounds of drums celebrating the presence of letters and alphabets around them — the stairs leading to the auditorium are plastered with alphabets of Indian scripts; cushions covers and saris tastefully arranged are designed with letters!

Organised by Achyut Palav School of Calligraphy and Svayambhu Foundation, the third edition of Callifest, is truly a Festival of Indian Scripts. The festival which began on Tuesday, December 1 is on till December 7.

“India is a country with more than 100 major languages and 17 official scripts which showcases the varied cultural heritage of our country. At the festival, we plan to hold introductory calligraphy workshops for Indian scripts such as Devnagari, Gurumukhi, Bengali, Malayalam and Urdu. We are also exhibiting Japanese and Tibetan calligraphy,” says Palav. The participants can also attend discussions on stylised lettering, type-setting and importance of manuscripts.

On display: An exhibition displaying the works of different calligraphy artists is also a part of the event. The works include lettering done on textured papers, scrolls, wooden carvings, lettering intricately mixed with paintings and calligraphy on manuscripts like Pothi, Tadpatra, Bhurjpatra and metal plates. The fonts and scripts of the artwork displayed are from various languages — Indian scripts as well as scripts from foreign languages.
